Tennis Racquet: Understanding Swing Weight

Swing weight is considered one of the most important measurements in picking the right racquet for you. To define it in simple terms: swing weight is the resistance you feel when you swing a racket.

Please note that many think of swing weight and racquet’s static weight to be the same. While the weight of a racquet plays a major role in the swing feel and weight, they are not one and the same.

Imagine a heavy racket and a lighter tennis racket. It is possible for the lighter one to have more swing weight than its heavier counterpart. There are a few factors that affect swing weight, one of them being the static weight of the racquet.

The weight distribution along the length of the racquet has a huge impact on the swing measurement. Some racquets are made head heavy, some head light, while many have an even balance - meaning the centre of mass is at the centre of the racquets length. If you wish to balance an evenly balanced stick, (on a balance board, which is a tool used to check balance of a racquet) you can achieve this by balancing at the centre of the racquet’s length. If you try to balance a heavy-head racquet at the centre, the head of the racquet (being heavy) will droop downwards. Similarly, in the case of light-head rackets, the tail ( the grip side) will droop.

Now that we have understood the effects of various weight distributions, it is easy to understand swing weight.

Why would any player want to pick head heavy or head light racquets? Racquets that are generally heavy, (static weight), tend to absorb most of the shock, making it less strenuous on the player’s arm. By making the head heavy, however, players achieve a degree of stability when hitting a ball. Heavy heads tend to be stable while the opposite is true for light heads.

Depending on your play style and what would improve your game, you could choose the weight of the head; meaning heavy swing weight or light. By understanding this article, you will be able to make a decision while looking for that tennis racquet with the right amount of swing weight.

Finding the right balance is very crucial. And that being said, there is no rule as such but simply guidelines. A racquet that is light enough to swing without much effort and also impart good amount of impact on the ball.

Notation
In the specifications of a racquet, you will see a number followed by letters ‘pts’ and ‘HL’/’HH’.

Pts stands for points, HL for Head Light while HH means Head Heavy.

A number implies how heavier (or lighter) the head weight is.

Also, a racquet with 0 is an evenly balanced one.

Greater Plow through
Increase in swing weight will allow for greater plow through potential. This can be achieved by adding weight (tungsten or lead strips) at the 12o’clock position of the racket. While this increases weight of the stick very little, the effect it creates is massive in terms of plow-through. The swing weight increases dramatically.
